The Raices monument celebrates the roots that shaped Puerto Rico: Taino, African, and Spanish heritage intertwined into one living culture.
Touch the stone that once stood between Old San Juan and the world. Massive defenses that still frame some of the best ocean views on the island.

The oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere, still serving as the governor's residence today.
One of the most cinematic corners of Old San Juan. Bronze figures capture a legendary moment of faith, community, and resilience.
Colorful facades, wrought-iron balconies, then the Cathedral Basilica of San Juan Bautista - founded in 1521, often called the second-oldest church in the Western Hemisphere.
A hidden-feeling plaza with sweeping views and peaceful energy. Then on to Plaza San Jose - one of Old San Juan's finest living rooms.
The massive barracks that once housed Spanish troops, then the grand finale: El Morro, where sweeping Atlantic views and layers of history meet.

Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan) is a 500-year-old fortified colonial city on the western tip of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Founded in 1521, it features cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial architecture, two UNESCO listed forts (El Morro and San Cristobal), and around seven blocks of historic plazas, churches, and homes. It is the oldest European settlement under the US flag.
The floating umbrellas are a public art installation on Calle Fortaleza featuring colorful umbrellas suspended above the cobblestone street. They were first installed in 2015 and have become one of Old San Juan most photographed landmarks. The display is free to walk under and is one of the photo stops on our walking tour.
The tour passes by El Morro and covers its history from outside, but entry to the fort itself is not included. Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a separate ticketed attraction managed by the US National Park Service. We recommend visiting it before or after our walk.
The essentials in Old San Juan include the floating umbrellas on Calle Fortaleza, the city walls along Paseo de la Princesa, Plaza San Jose, the San Juan Gate, the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, and the views of El Morro and San Cristobal forts. Our walking tour covers 10 stops including most of these landmarks at a relaxed pace.
The cruise port is in Old San Juan itself, so most cruise terminals are within a 5 to 15 minute walk of our meeting point at Paseo de la Princesa. From Pier 3 or Pier 4 it is roughly a 10 minute walk along the waterfront. Free trolleys and rideshare are also available if walking is not preferred.
