A guided night kayak through Laguna Grande, one of the few places on Earth where every paddle stroke ignites the water. Inside a protected nature reserve. Beginner friendly.
Essential Details
No instruction, no guide on the water, no context about the ecosystem. You paddle out, you paddle back. You saw glowing water but have no idea why it glows or how rare it is.
We do it differently. Every tour starts with a Kayak 101 lesson on shore. Your guide paddles with you the entire way, explains the science behind the bioluminescence, and sets a pace that works for everyone. Snacks and refreshments after. You leave with the experience and the story behind it.
Real-time availability. Instant confirmation. Free cancellation.

This is what you came for. On the open bay, the bioluminescent dinoflagellates light up with each movement. Your guide shares the science and gives you time to take it in.
Not a race to get back. The group takes a moment to float in quiet water under the night sky. No agenda, just the experience.

Book NowReal guests. Real glow. Real reviews.
"We went on a full moon night knowing our chances were unlikely, but the guides brought a large tarp that blocked out all the light so we could see the bioluminescence perfectly. Mangrove kayaking under the stars is already special."
"My group and I have been joining Alvin and his team for years. The bioluminescent bay, Alvin and his team continue to show us the best that Puerto Rico has to offer. We will definitely be back."
"They gave us incredible background on how to preserve the bio bay, and how and why it is luminescent. We set off into the sunset then took off to the bio bay, one of the best nights of our lives."
Every concern, answered clearly.
No prior experience needed. Every tour starts with a Kayak 101 lesson and full safety briefing on solid ground before you ever touch the water. We use two-person double kayaks. Your guide sets a relaxed, comfortable pace from launch to return.
We use two-person double kayaks. You and one other person sit in the same kayak and paddle together. If you are bringing a child, they sit in the kayak with you and paddle alongside you.
Yes, children 6 years and older may participate. Every child must share a double kayak with an adult from their own party. A 1:1 adult-to-child ratio is required. If your group has more children than adults, the extra children cannot participate.
Yes. Maximum weight per passenger is 225 lbs (102 kg). This is a hard safety limit enforced for kayak stability. Guests who exceed this limit cannot board. Refunds are not issued onsite for this policy.
The earlier tour lets you paddle the mangrove channel while there is still some natural light. The later tour is almost entirely in the dark from the start. However, glow intensity is far more affected by moon brightness, weather, and tidal conditions than by which time slot you book.
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon. Brightness varies based on moonlight, rainfall, wind, and tidal conditions. We cannot guarantee intensity. Most guests experience visible glowing effects on every tour. We also have techniques to help you see the glow even on brighter nights.
Yes. Roundtrip hotel pickup is available from San Juan, Rio Grande, Luquillo, and Fajardo for $145 per person. The self-drive option is $85 per person and meets at Kayak Village in Fajardo. Pickup details are confirmed after booking.
Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet, and bring a dry change for after. Water shoes or strapped sandals work best, no loose flip-flops. Bring bug spray, a water bottle, and a small dry bag for your phone. Leave valuables at your hotel.
If your group has more children than adults, the children who cannot be paired with an adult from your party will not be able to participate. We maintain a strict 1:1 ratio. Call us at 787-209-2127 if you need help structuring your group.
Free cancellation is available when you cancel in advance. Tours cancelled by us due to unsafe weather are fully refunded. Call 787-209-2127 if you don't see your preferred time slot.
Bioluminescent water glows when disturbed because it contains microscopic dinoflagellates called Pyrodinium bahamense. When the water is moved, the dinoflagellates produce a brief flash of blue-green light through a chemical reaction between luciferin and the enzyme luciferase. In Laguna Grande, the dinoflagellates concentrate at densities high enough that every kayak paddle, fish movement, and ripple in the water creates a visible glow.
No. Swimming is prohibited in Laguna Grande because the bay is inside Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, a federally protected ecosystem. Swimming would disturb the dinoflagellates, introduce sunscreen chemicals, and damage the mangrove root system. You can touch the water from your kayak. Of the three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico, only La Parguera in Lajas permits swimming, and its glow is significantly less bright than Laguna Grande or Mosquito Bay.
Bioluminescence in Laguna Grande is produced by single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates, specifically Pyrodinium bahamense. When the dinoflagellates are disturbed by movement in the water, calcium ions inside their cells trigger a reaction between two molecules: luciferin (the light-producing substance) and luciferase (the enzyme that activates it). The result is a brief flash of blue-green light. The flash lasts about a tenth of a second per disturbance.
The brightest viewing happens on moonless nights (new moon) when no natural light competes with the glow. Conditions are best during the dry season from December through April when water is calmer and rainfall does not dilute the dinoflagellate concentration. Avoid the 3-5 days before and after a full moon. Time of night within the tour window matters less than moon phase and weather. We run tours daily year-round and provide a tarp to block ambient light even on brighter nights.
Yes. Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays: Laguna Grande in Fajardo (the most accessible from San Juan), Mosquito Bay in Vieques (the brightest in the world, requires a ferry to reach), and La Parguera in Lajas (the only one where swimming is permitted, but the glow is significantly less bright). Of the three, Laguna Grande is closest to San Juan hotels and most popular for kayak tours.
The tour is approximately 2 hours from launch to return at the Kayak Village dock. Total experience including the Kayak 101 lesson, safety briefing, gear-up, and the snacks on shore after returning is about 2.5 hours. Daily departures are at 5:45 PM and 7:45 PM.
Pair your night on glowing water with a rainforest morning or a hidden waterfall.
