South-side rainforest waterfalls, crystal-clear swimming holes, ancient Taíno petroglyphs, and seafood at the famous Malecón de Naguabo. Hotel pickup from San Juan or Fajardo included.
Essential Details
Most travelers do the visitor center loop. You're about to do something different.
Most El Yunque visitors drive Route 191 from the north entrance, queue at El Portal Visitor Center, walk paved paths to La Mina Falls and Yokahú Tower, and head back to San Juan. It's beautiful. It's also the same experience 600,000 visitors have every year.
The south side of El Yunque is a different rainforest. No visitor center. No paved trails. No crowds. The Río Blanco watershed cuts through volcanic rock to form Charco El Hippie — a hidden chain of crystal-clear swimming holes, jungle waterfalls, where ancient Taíno people carved petroglyphs into the boulders a thousand years ago. These carvings depict Taíno cosmology — celestial motifs tied to Yúcahu, the deity who battled chaos to bring rain. The carvings are still there. Most travelers never see them.
The road in is narrow, unpaved in sections, with no cell signal and rental car break-in warnings posted at the trailhead. Most visitors look it up, get nervous about the drive, and skip it entirely. We handle every logistical problem so you show up ready to swim.
Air-conditioned hotel pickup from your San Juan or Fajardo hotel. Helmets provided for the Adventure Expedition. After the pools, waterfalls, and petroglyphs, lunch at the famous Malecón de Naguabo — 30+ oceanfront seafood restaurants where fishermen bring in the catch each morning. You show up ready to swim. We do the rest.
Both options include hotel pickup, your guide, and the Malecon de Naguabo lunch stop. Choose your level.
Swim in crystal-clear natural pools beneath the main waterfall. Relax, explore, and take in the jungle surroundings at your own pace.
Full adventure with safety gear. River rapids, dense jungle hike to a hidden waterfall, and ancient Taino petroglyphs. Physically demanding sections at guide's discretion.

Every concern, answered directly.
Basic swimming ability is recommended since some of the natural pools are deep. There are shallow areas to enjoy. You do not have to get in the water at all - plenty of guests sit on the rocks and take in the scenery.
Yes. Families love it. The swimming holes at Charco El Hippie have areas for different comfort levels, and the Malecon de Naguabo has food for every appetite. Minimum age is 4. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
No - and that is by design. We make dedicated food stops at a local bakery in the morning and the famous Malecon de Naguabo for lunch so you can order exactly what you want. Bring cash or card. The Malecon is affordable and the seafood is as fresh as it gets.
We have a flexible itinerary with multiple stops and backup options. Rain on the east coast of Puerto Rico is usually short-lived. We may adjust the order of stops but we rarely cancel a bad weather day. We reroute to an equally great one.
Moderate. The trail to Charco El Hippie involves a short walk on natural, uneven terrain with some rock stepping. The Malecon de Naguabo is flat and easy. Sturdy sandals work for the Pool experience. Sneakers required for the Adventure Expedition.
Charco El Hippie is a small group tour with a maximum of 12 guests. Call or text us at (787) 209-2127 with any questions about your group.
We need a minimum of 4 guests to run each tour. If minimums are not met we will contact you in advance and work together to reschedule to a date that works. You will not be left hanging.
Wear your swimsuit under your clothes so you are ready for Charco El Hippie. Bring water shoes or sturdy sandals that can get wet and grip on rocks. Pack a change of clothes in a small daypack for after swimming. Adventure Expedition guests must wear sneakers.
We drop you off at the same hotel or location where we picked you up. Total tour time is approximately 5-7 hours.
Taino petroglyphs are carved rock images created by the indigenous Taino people of Puerto Rico between 500 and 1,500 years ago. The petroglyphs along the Rio Blanco near Charco El Hippie include human figures, sun symbols, and spiritual imagery carved directly into riverbed boulders. They are best viewed during the Adventure Expedition tier, which includes a guided walk along the river to the carved rocks.
Charco El Hippie is in the town of Naguabo on the south side of El Yunque National Forest, along the Rio Blanco. It is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from San Juan and 25 minutes from Fajardo. The site is accessible only via guided tour due to remote mountain road conditions, limited parking, and private land restrictions.
The Malecon de Naguabo is a beachfront promenade in the seaside town of Naguabo with approximately 30 family-owned seafood restaurants. It is well known across Puerto Rico for the freshest local seafood, including snapper, conch, octopus, and the traditional empanadillas de chapin. Our tour includes a stop at the Malecon for lunch on the return from the rainforest. Food is paid for separately at your chosen restaurant.
The north side of El Yunque is the main tourist entrance, with paved roads, La Coca Falls, the Yokahu Tower, and the visitor center. It can be crowded and parts of it now require US Forest Service reservations. The south side, accessed through Naguabo, has hidden swimming holes, waterfalls, and ancient Taino petroglyphs with almost no other tourists. The south side requires a guided tour because the access roads are remote.
No. Charco El Hippie is on private land accessed via a remote mountain road in Naguabo. There is no official trailhead, no parking lot, and no signage. Local landowners restrict access to authorized guided tours only. Our tour is the established way to visit the site safely, legally, and with full context on the petroglyphs and the river.
Yes. Charco El Hippie is consistently called the highlight of a Puerto Rico trip by guests who have already seen the north-side El Yunque trails. The combination of natural swimming holes, waterfalls, ancient Taino petroglyphs, and the Malecon de Naguabo seafood lunch creates a full cultural and adventure day with no crowds. It is especially valued by repeat visitors to Puerto Rico looking for something beyond the typical itinerary.
