Cayo Icacos is a small uninhabited coral island off the northeast coast of Puerto Rico, part of the La Cordillera Nature Reserve. It is known for white sand beaches, shallow reefs ideal for snorkeling, and protected status that keeps the water clear and the reef healthy. The island is only accessible by boat.
La Cordillera is a chain of uninhabited islands and cays off the northeast coast of Puerto Rico, designated a protected nature reserve in 1986. The reserve covers approximately 530 acres of land and surrounding reef. Fishing, anchoring on reefs, and disturbing marine life are restricted, which is why the water and reefs remain pristine.
Cayo Icacos sits about 35 miles east of San Juan. The drive to our Villa Marina meeting point in Fajardo takes 50 to 65 minutes by car or rideshare, depending on traffic. From Villa Marina the boat ride to Cayo Icacos is approximately 20 to 30 minutes across La Cordillera.
Usually no. The Cordillera channel is sheltered by surrounding cays and the boat ride is typically smooth in afternoon conditions. On windy days the water can be choppy for short stretches. If conditions are unsafe the captain will reroute or reschedule. Guests prone to seasickness should bring preventative medication.
Cayo Icacos reef is home to parrot fish, sergeant majors, blue tang, yellow snapper, and schools of grunts. Sea turtles and southern stingrays are common sightings. The water is shallow and clear, so even beginners spot marine life quickly. The protected reserve means coral and marine life are notably healthier than unprotected areas of the island.
Yes. Cayo Icacos is one of the few snorkel destinations in Puerto Rico inside a protected nature reserve. The water is consistently clear, the reef is shallow enough for beginners, and the uninhabited island means no crowds. Most guests rate it the best part of their Puerto Rico trip.
